The Heart of Leadership Organizational effectiveness depends on the forerunners leading the charge. Transformational and team leadership approaches are two options businesses can choose from to meet the vision of the company. One method identifies an individual at the figurehead of the group or division, where the other approach leaves the option open for natural selection. Neither leadership approach is wrong. Quite the contrary, transformational and team leadership share similar behavioral traits inspiring the group to reach the objective. A component of the three†¦show more content†¦Transformational leadership inspires employees to obtain far-reaching goals to fulfill self-actualization needs (tip of Maslow’s Needs Hierarchy pyramid) (Mosley Patrick, 2011; Nelson Quick, 2011). Alternatively, team leadership centers on augmenting team efficiency by fulfilling the needs of the members (Morgeson, DeRue, Karam, 2010). Team leadership has two categories: formal and informal (Morgeson et al., 2010). Formal team leadership identifies a person to satisfy the function of team leader, whereas informal team leadership allows members of the group to assume the responsibility naturally when the person’s talents are most helpful (Morgeson et al., 2010). For the purpose of this paper, the discussion will remain with informal team leadership. Transformational Leadership Transformational leaders construct a shared vision with their followers, providing a blueprint for staff to refer to when questioning direction (Yang, 2014). Furthermore, the leaders empower their followers and offer coaching and resources to meet the vision (Birasnav, 2014). Leaders must be flexible by adapting and responding to a situation not going to plan for an organization to be successful; transformational leaders tend to correlate with flexibility (Birasnav, 2014).
